Key Stage 3 Curriculum Overview at the English International School – Baghdad
At the English International School – Baghdad, our Key Stage 3 (KS3) curriculum provides a comprehensive and stimulating education for students in Grades 6 to 8. Building on the strong foundations established in Key Stage 2, KS3 focuses on developing independent learning, critical thinking, and intellectual curiosity while preparing students for the rigours of Key Stage 4 and beyond.
Our Approach: The Lower Secondary Curriculum
Our KS3 programme follows the Lower Secondary Curriculum, which is based on the English National Curriculum and tailored for international learners. This ensures that students receive a well-rounded education, combining academic excellence with personal development and global awareness.
Core Academic Foundations
Our KS3 curriculum builds upon established foundations with increased academic rigour and specialization.
English
English lessons at KS3 aim to develop students' reading, writing, and communication skills to a higher level. Pupils engage with a diverse range of literary and non-fiction texts, learning to analyse language, structure, and meaning. Writing instruction focuses on composition, advanced grammar, creative and formal writing styles, and persuasive techniques. Speaking and listening remain integral, fostering confident and articulate communicators.
Mathematics
Mathematics in KS3 builds on prior knowledge to develop fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills. Topics include number operations, algebra, geometry, statistics, and probability. Lessons encourage analytical thinking, real-world applications, and the ability to approach complex problems systematically.
Science
Science is delivered through an inquiry-led approach, covering Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Students develop practical investigation skills, hypothesis testing, and evidence-based reasoning. Topics include living systems, materials, energy, forces, and the physical universe, allowing students to explore concepts scientifically while cultivating curiosity and critical thinking.
International Middle Years Curriculum (IMYC)
The IMYC is a thematic, project-based curriculum that integrates Geography, History, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, and Technology. IMYC units encourage students to make connections between disciplines, develop creativity, and engage in independent research, all while making learning engaging, meaningful, and enjoyable.
Personal and Social Development
Global Citizenship
Global Citizenship lessons develop students' awareness of cultural diversity, ethics, sustainability, and social responsibility. Pupils are encouraged to think critically about global issues and to act with empathy and integrity within their local and international communities.
Technology and Digital Skills
Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
ICT lessons equip students with essential digital skills, computational thinking, and safe online practices. Pupils use technology creatively to solve problems, communicate ideas, and enhance learning across all subjects.
Local Curriculum Integration
In accordance with local requirements, pupils continue to study Arabic, Religious Education (RE), and Physical Education (PE).
Arabic lessons continue in KS3, catering to both native and non-native speakers. Lessons focus on reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills while promoting an appreciation for Arabic language and culture. RE lessons encourage understanding of local traditions, values, and moral principles. Pupils explore ethical questions and develop respect for diverse beliefs and cultural practices. PE lessons support physical development, fitness, coordination, teamwork, and a lifelong appreciation of active and healthy living.
Future Ready Programme
The Future Ready course prepares students for life beyond school. Pupils explore career pathways, university options, CV writing, interview skills, and personal development strategies, helping them set goals and gain confidence in planning for their future.
Assessment
At the end of Grade 8, students sit the Lower Secondary Achievement Tests under JCQ regulations. These externally administered assessments measure attainment in core subjects and provide an internationally recognised benchmark for academic progress.
