Key Stage 2 Curriculum | English International School – Baghdad

Key Stage 2 Curriculum Overview at the English International School – Baghdad

At the English International School – Baghdad, our Key Stage 2 (KS2) curriculum provides a rich and structured learning experience for pupils in Grades 2 to 5. Building on the foundations established in Key Stage 1, our KS2 programme is designed to develop academic confidence, critical thinking, and personal growth, while continuing to meet both international and local educational standards.

Our Approach: The Pearson iPrimary Framework

The curriculum is based on the Pearson iPrimary framework, which aligns closely with the English National Curriculum and has been adapted for international learners. This ensures that pupils receive a broad, engaging, and progressive education across core and foundation subjects, preparing them for the academic and personal demands of Key Stage 3.

Core Academic Foundations

Alongside our core framework, our KS2 provision incorporates key elements of the English National Curriculum across essential subject areas.

English

English lessons in Key Stage 2 focus on developing reading comprehension, writing skills, vocabulary, and spoken communication. Pupils engage with a wide range of literary and non-fiction texts, learning to analyse language, structure, and meaning. Writing instruction includes composition, grammar, spelling, and creative expression, helping students convey ideas clearly and confidently.

Mathematics

Mathematics instruction emphasises conceptual understanding, fluency, and problem-solving. Pupils explore number operations, fractions, decimals, geometry, measurement, data handling, and reasoning. Lessons are designed to be interactive and practical, enabling children to apply mathematical skills in real-world contexts.

Science

Science continues to nurture curiosity and investigative skills. Pupils explore topics such as forces, materials, living things, the environment, and the human body. Practical experiments, observation, and critical thinking help students develop scientific literacy and the ability to draw evidence-based conclusions.

International Primary Curriculum (IPC)

The International Primary Curriculum remains a central component of KS2, offering theme-based learning that integrates Geography, History, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, and Technology. IPC units encourage creative thinking, research, and collaboration, allowing pupils to explore concepts in depth while making connections across subjects. The programme is engaging, hands-on, and designed to make learning enjoyable and memorable.

Personal and Social Development

Global Citizenship

Global Citizenship lessons develop students' understanding of cultural diversity, social responsibility, and environmental awareness. Pupils are encouraged to think ethically, engage respectfully with others, and understand their place in a connected world.

Local Curriculum Integration

In accordance with local government requirements, pupils continue to study Arabic, Religious Education (RE), Physical Education (PE), and Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

Arabic lessons support both native and non-native speakers, while RE fosters understanding of local traditions and values. Physical Education develops coordination, fitness, and teamwork. Additionally, KS2 introduces Information and Communication Technology (ICT), where pupils learn essential digital skills, safe online practices, and problem-solving through technology.

Modern Foreign Language

French is offered as a Modern Foreign Language for pupils in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. The programme introduces children to basic vocabulary, pronunciation, conversational phrases, and simple grammar. Lessons are engaging and interactive, using songs, games, role-play, and storytelling to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Learning French at an early age encourages cultural awareness, builds confidence in communication, and provides a strong foundation for further language study in Key Stage 3 and beyond.

Assessment

At the end of Grade 5, students sit the Pearson iPrimary Achievement Tests, externally administered under JCQ (Joint Council for Qualifications) regulations. These assessments measure attainment across core subjects and provide internationally recognised benchmarks for academic progress.
