Key Stage 5 Curriculum Overview at the English International School – Baghdad
At Key Stage 5, our curriculum is designed to prepare students for higher education and future career pathways through a combination of rigorous academic study and practical skills development. Students select three subjects from a range of Edexcel International A Level (IAL) courses, allowing them to focus on areas that align with their interests and aspirations.
Our Approach: International A Level Specialization
The KS5 curriculum emphasizes specialized, in-depth study in chosen subject areas, providing students with the advanced knowledge and skills needed for university success and professional development.
Core Subject Options
Mathematics
Mathematics provides students with a strong foundation in pure and applied mathematical concepts, developing analytical thinking and problem-solving skills. Students explore topics such as algebra, calculus, and statistics, which are essential for careers in science, engineering, economics, and finance. Further Mathematics is offered to students seeking deeper mathematical challenges and is ideal for those planning to pursue mathematics, physics, or engineering at university.
Chemistry
Chemistry engages students in the study of chemical principles, experimental techniques, and real-world applications, from organic and inorganic chemistry to physical chemistry. It fosters analytical thinking, laboratory skills, and scientific reasoning, preparing students for science-related higher education courses and careers in healthcare, research, and industry.
Physics
Physics allows students to explore the fundamental laws of nature, including mechanics, electricity, thermodynamics, and modern physics. It develops problem-solving skills, quantitative analysis, and experimental techniques, providing an excellent foundation for careers in engineering, technology, and scientific research.
Business
Business introduces students to key concepts in management, marketing, finance, and operations, encouraging critical thinking and decision-making in real-world business contexts. Students gain practical insights into entrepreneurship, corporate strategy, and the global economy, preparing them for university courses in business, management, and finance.

Students study microeconomics and macroeconomics, developing analytical skills and the ability to evaluate economic issues critically. This subject is ideal for those interested in finance, international relations, or public policy.
Biology
Biology explores the structure, function, and interactions of living organisms at molecular, cellular, and ecological levels. Students study topics such as cell biology, genetics, evolution, physiology, and ecosystems, while developing practical laboratory skills, data analysis, and critical thinking. This subject is ideal for those planning to pursue medicine, biomedical sciences, environmental science, or other life science-related fields.
Future Ready Programme
In addition to their academic subjects, all students participate in Future Ready, a non-examined course designed to support career guidance and personal development. Future Ready helps students identify their strengths, explore potential career pathways, develop employability skills, and prepare portfolios for higher education applications or professional opportunities.
Assessment Structure
Students sit their AS modules at the end of Grade 11 and complete their A2 modules at the end of Grade 12, allowing for a staged assessment that supports their academic progression and readiness for university.
Educational Outcomes
Our Key Stage 5 curriculum combines rigorous academic study with practical skills development, ensuring students are fully equipped to succeed in higher education and thrive in their future careers.
