Key Stage 1 Curriculum Overview at the English International School – Baghdad
At the English International School – Baghdad, our Key Stage 1 (KS1) curriculum provides a strong, inspiring, and balanced beginning to primary education for pupils in KG2 and Grade 1. Reflecting both international best practice and local requirements, our KS1 programme offers a rich blend of academic rigour, personal development, and joyful, discovery-led learning.
Our Approach: The Pearson iPrimary Framework
Our approach is anchored in the Pearson iPrimary framework, an internationally recognised curriculum that aligns closely with the English National Curriculum while being thoughtfully adapted for international learners. This ensures that our pupils develop essential knowledge and skills in a way that is globally relevant, culturally responsive, and developmentally appropriate.
Core Academic Foundations
Alongside our core framework, our KS1 provision incorporates key elements of the English National Curriculum across essential subject areas.
English
Our English curriculum builds strong foundations in early literacy and communication. Pupils develop reading fluency through a structured phonics programme, guided reading, and exposure to a wide range of texts. Writing lessons focus on handwriting, spelling, vocabulary, sentence construction, and creative expression. Spoken language is prioritised throughout all areas of learning, ensuring children grow in confidence and clarity when expressing their ideas.
Mathematics
Mathematics at KS1 follows a mastery-based approach, enabling pupils to understand key mathematical ideas deeply and securely. Topics include number sense, basic operations, shapes, measurement, patterns, and early problem-solving. Lessons are practical, engaging, and designed to help children connect mathematical concepts to real-life situations.
Science
In Science, children develop curiosity and investigative skills through hands-on exploration of the natural and physical world. They learn to observe, ask questions, and make simple predictions while exploring topics such as plants, animals, materials, weather, and the human body. Activities promote inquiry, reasoning, and a sense of wonder.
International Primary Curriculum (IPC)
A central and exciting part of our KS1 offer is the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), a vibrant, theme-based subject that integrates Geography, History, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, and Technology. IPC units are designed to be highly engaging and cross-curricular, allowing children to explore big ideas through practical activities, creative tasks, and collaborative learning. The IPC encourages pupils to think globally, investigate the world around them, and develop international-mindedness—all while having a great deal of fun.
Personal and Social Development
Global Citizenship
Global Citizenship supports pupils in becoming thoughtful, responsible members of their community and the wider world. Through age-appropriate discussions and activities, children learn about diversity, kindness, environmental responsibility, and cultural awareness, helping them develop empathy and strong social values.
Local Curriculum Integration
In line with local government requirements, pupils study Arabic and Religious Education (RE).
Arabic lessons support both native and non-native speakers through differentiated instruction. Religious Education introduces pupils to key values and traditions of the local community, strengthening understanding and respect.
Physical Development
PE supports physical development, coordination, fitness, and teamwork. Pupils participate in structured, enjoyable activities that promote confidence, healthy habits, and a positive attitude towards sport.
Modern Foreign Language
French is offered as a Modern Foreign Language for pupils in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. The programme introduces children to basic vocabulary, pronunciation, conversational phrases, and simple grammar. Lessons are engaging and interactive, using songs, games, role-play, and storytelling to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Learning French at an early age encourages cultural awareness, builds confidence in communication, and provides a strong foundation for further language study in Key Stage 3 and beyond.
